From Kristin Neff and Chris Germer's Mindful Self-Compassion Program. In safe circle, we feel soothed and content; it's a good place for recharging our batteries. In challenge circle, we are stretched; it's like pushing out our sails to catch the wind and can be scary. If we succeed in the challenge, we grow the amount we can tolerate in the challenge circle. In overwhelm, we begin to shut down (it's like the boat hits the rocks). Knowing where we are, and when we're about to move into overwhelm, can help us to give ourselves what we need.
